My Family's Business

Three Mad Potters is owned by an explorative homeschool family with two teens.

We’re from Prince George, BC, and we stared our business in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic. Our family has always been extremely creative, pouring all our fun ideas into many different forms of art. After attending Leanna Carlson’s pottery classes for some time, we found a new favourite way to create. Leanna opened the door to unending 3D possibilities through clay. We eagerly learned more and more about clay until we were able to make beautiful, well-made, strong mugs. And now we’ve become real potters! Working as a family on our business, we have become even more of a team. We will keep growing our skills in pottery, communication, and teamwork development. Even in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, our family has pushed through to start our pottery business. It’s going to be fun, new, and even complicated for us at times, but we’ll keep at it!

Refining The Mushroom Mug

My mushroom mug design has changed and become more appealing and cost/time effective since I first made them in 2022. The shape of the mushroom head has gone from large and half-circle-like to smaller and more cone-shaped. I used to carve half of the mug with swirls and lines, and that took a lot longer than what I do now. I only carve 4 - 5 line in the middle section of one side of each mug. Less is more.

My making process has become faster and more efficient too. I am now proud to say that I have become skilled in sculpting these in 35 - 45 minutes instead of 1-1.5 hours. All this time matters in any and all designs I make because {1.} I receive an agreed upon cut of each mug I add a design to, so I wouldn’t want to spend 8 hours on something, and only get paid for the end result at a set rate that doesn’t justify 7 of those hours. (Just an example. It doesn’t take me 8 hours, and I am satisfied with my cut.) {2.} None of our customers have complained or even noticed that I have changed the design to be less crowded or big.

Design With Intention

While going through this whole design process, I remained very open to change and compromise in order to make my design beautiful and efficient for the manual production that I would have to do to make these mugs. Time is money. Lots of clay and glaze is also money. So it's important to be very thoughtful whenever making a new design, since it has to be physically strong and visually appealing.
